How to encourage your children to drink more water and less sugary drink

We're all aware of the vital importance of water consumption for our health. But what about children? Of course, it's just as important for them to drink water, provided it's free from impurities. But first, how can we get them to drink more pure water and less sugary drinks?

How can you get your children to increase their daily water consumption?

The best solution is to get children to love water. It sounds simple, but it really is. There are ways to do it, and to do it easily, by following these simple tips

Start by choosing a specific bottle or glass (color, shape, design) that your children will enjoy filling with filtered water.
Choose a special straw to amuse your children (color, shape, etc.).
Add frozen fruit to purified water: they'll love the naturally sweet taste and color.
Encourage them to fill their own water bottles directly from the small tap on the water purification system.
Freeze a special bottle of water. This will come in handy for cooling off during the hot season.
Offer them rewards: a sticker or a treat they love is a great incentive to drink pure water.
Set them a good example and make sure they see you drinking water.
Take water with you when you go out for dinner. If water is presented as the first and only option, it will become a healthy habit.
Take reusable water bottles with you when you travel.

? Why is water so important for children and babies

There are many reasons why drinking enough water is important for infants and children.
The first reason is that children are at greater risk of dehydration than adults. The signs of dehydration common in adults have been tested and identified, but there are some major symptoms that should be given particular attention in infants and children when identifying the warning signs of dehydration:

Less urine: for infants in diapers is a clear sign
Dark yellow or brown urine
A pale, emaciated appearance
Fatigue and exhaustion
Fewer tears
Increased thirst
Deep-set or dark eyes
Dry tongue, lips and mouth
Dizziness
Nausea and headaches

More severe dehydration will cause the following symptoms, which should be treated immediately:

Extreme thirst
Exhaustion, drowsiness, apathy or lower-than-normal activity level
Pale, sunken eyes; few or no tears when crying
Cold – especially in arms and legs
Rapid breathing and pulse faster than usual
Irritability and/or confusion or irascibility
If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, they are signs of severe dehydration. Seek immediate medical attention!

?Sweetened beverages – why are they a problem

Apart from the obvious risk of drinking sugary fruit juices that will dehydrate them, there's an even more important reason to choose purified water for your children instead of the sugary alternatives that flood supermarket shelves.
According to a new study from the Victoria Cancer Council and the University of Melbourne, consuming sugary drinks can increase the risk of cancer, regardless of body size. The study, entitled "Consuming artificially sweetened soft drinks and obesity-related cancer risk", involved 35,000 Australians who developed 3,283 cases of obesity-related cancer. The study showed that the more sweetened soft drinks participants drank, the higher their risk of cancer. Sugar was undoubtedly the main factor.
According to the same study, "sugary drinks, including soft drinks, which are already known to increase obesity, significantly increase the risk of 13 cancers. More people need to understand this link and switch to drinking "Cancer is just one of the chronic health problems associated with sweetened beverages. Other health problems in children caused by sweetened beverages can include:

Tooth grinding and decay
Reduced appetite
Disturbance of intestinal functions

A common misconception among parents is that fruit juice is a healthy alternative to drinking water. But a glass of apple juice can contain up to six teaspoons of sugar! Coke can contain around 9 teaspoons of sugar! That's a lot of sugar.

So the healthiest option is to encourage children to eat fresh fruit and vegetables and drink clean water.
